A gathering place for coffee, books, and connection
Hemingway Café & Bookstore was founded by David and Bernice Bridges on a love of stories and a belief in bringing people togther. From early mornings to quiet evenings, we’re a neighborhood space where ideas are shared, friendships grow, and everyone belongs.
David & Bernice met in a Literature class and quickly bonded over Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and the authors they studied together.
Our first book was sold, A Farewell to Arms was sold from a small pop-up book gallery tucked inside the former Plato Café.
The doors of our Downtown Providence location opened to a warm community reception, bringing together coffee lovers, readers, students, and neighbors under one roof.
After more than a decade of growth, the café expanded its menu and events calendar, introducing author talks, book clubs, and seasonal favorites that remain popular today.
What began as a shared love of books has grown into a beloved neighborhood tradition. We remain committed to great coffee, great stories, and creating a place to keep coming back to.
Our books are carefully chosen to reflect our philosophies on reading, and life. Each month, our staff chooses a favorite recommendation:

An emotional biography that connects life milestones and events with published works of one of America's most celebrated authors.
~Garcia

Sharp humor, memorable characters, and just the right amount of absurdity.
~Brian
